Description:

One of the most taboo and uncomfortable topics to discuss is how coaches feel when their client goes on the attack. While this can be a rare occurrence, it's bound to happen sooner or later. A coach's ability to maintain a coaching mindset, composure, and compassion is imperative to managing these delicate moments.

The group will be invited to speak openly and vulnerably about times when they were mistreated by their clients, how it made them question themselves as a coach, and how they professionally dealt with their own feelings while respecting their clients.

Participants will learn how to spot the three stages of fear-based resistance in their clients--and themselves. They will also learn tools to turn to when a future client inevitably becomes defensive (projecting their own fears/flaws) or otherwise adversarial.

Learning Objectives:

  • Spot fear-based resistance and address it head-on.
  • Develop tools and techniques to maintain confidence, self-compassion, and emotional peace of mind in the face of professional drama.
  • Form a clear plan to take advantage of peer supervision, mentoring, and other ethical resources instead of struggling in silence.

Core Competencies:

Demonstrates Ethical Practice, Embodies a Coaching Mindset, Co-Creates the Relationship, Cultivates Trust and Safety, Maintains Presence, Listens Actively, Evokes Awareness, Facilitates Client Growth

Presenter: Kathleen O'Grady, MCC

Kathleen O'Grady, MCC, is the self-made authentic leader, and positively disruptive pioneer responsible for launching Raleigh Coaching, LLC in 2008. She did this to support individual and organizational clients by inspiring authentic leadership, creativity, and innovation. Why? Because every cell in her body was screaming at her to do so. She even left the 'stability' of corporate America during a global financial crisis to pursue her passion, on her terms. Her family and friends thought she was out of her mind, but they eventually saw that it was well worth the leap of faith.

Driven to increase her level of impact, she later launched Raleigh Coaching Academy™ (RCA) to credibly educate and foster coaches who share her commitment to the coaching field's ethical integrity. RCA's Certified Authentic Leadership Coaching (CALC) program, dedicated to honoring individual uniqueness, is the most competitive edge one can harness. It is the only ICF approved coach specific training in the world designed for Authentic Leadership.  In other words, coaching to the soul versus just the goal.

Kathleen's contribution as two-time Past President of the Raleigh-Area Chapter of the International Coaching Federation Board of Directors and various other committee and advisory roles helped lead the chapter towards receiving multiple Global Awards from ICF. She is a graduate of The Business Coaching Certificate Program at NC State University and studied Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction through Duke Integrative Medicine.  She holds the Master Certified Coach (MCC) credential through the International Coaching Federation and multiple assessment certifications. Kathleen's work has been featured in web articles by the NYTimes.com, Huffingtonpost.com, Forbes.com, and eFinancialCareers.com.
